Prizes and Awards

The Josiah Royce Prize in American Idealist Thought
Prize amount: $500
To be awarded not more than once every five years for a major study in Idealism or other aspects of Roycean thought.
The Harry Todd Costello Prize
Prize Amount: $300
To be awarded approximately annually to a graduate student or recent PhD presentation at a conference or other event sponsored by the Society.
The John J. McDermott Prize
Prize Amount: $300
To be awarded approximately annually to the author of the best paper on Royce's philosophy of loyalty and community by a graduate student or recent PhD.

Prize Winners

Tommy J. Curry received the 2020 Josiah Royce Prize for his book Another white Man's Burden: Josiah Royce's Quest for a Philosophy of white Racial Empire.

Griffin Klemick received the Harry Todd Costello Prize at the Douglas MacDonald Conference on the Life and Work of Josiah Royce, His Colleagues and Students held in Nashville, Tennessee October 18-20, 2019.

Jennifer L. Roche received the Harry Todd Costello Prize at the Royce, California, and the World conference held in Grass Valley, California, August 16-18, 2013. 

Robert Main received the Harry Todd Costello Prize at the Josiah Royce Conference held at Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis, Indianapolis, IN, September 23-24, 2011.

Mathew A. Foust received the John E. Smith Essay Prize at the Royce Society meeting (held in conjunction with the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy annual meeting) at Spokane, Washington, March 10-12, 2011.

Alexander V. Stehn received the Outstanding Essay Award at the program "Perspectives of Graduate Students on William James and Josiah Royce" Harvard University, May 25, 2007.  This award was jointly sponsored by the Josiah Royce Society, the William James Society, and the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy.

Mathew A. Foust received the Costello Prize at "Josiah Royce on Ethics and Community: The Sixth Annual Donald G. Wester Conference," Oklahoma City, April 7-8, 2006.

Brent Crouch received the Costello Prize at the "Josiah Royce Sesquicentennial Celebration," Vanderbilt University, April 9-11, 2005.

Dwayne Tunstall received the Costello Prize at the "Josiah Royce Sesquicentennial Celebration," Vanderbilt University, April 9-11, 2005.
