Please direct all replies or questions to: royceconference2013@gmail.com

Royce, California, and the World, a meeting of scholars and communities, will be held August 16-18, 2013, in Royce’s historic birthplace and hometown, Grass Valley, California, in the beautiful Sierra Foothills. The meeting will be held at the Holbrooke Hotel, an important California landmark.

In recent years the work of Josiah Royce has drawn increased attention from scholars and thinkers all over the world. Since its formation in 2003, the Josiah Royce Society has promoted scholarly activities related to Royce’s ideas in a far-ranging series of national and international conferences. In 2013, the Royce Society brings Royce home to his roots and celebrates the 100th anniversary of Royce’s masterwork, The Problem of Christianity

Please note that since Grass Valley and Nevada County are prime tourist destinations, all summer weekends get booked ahead of time by visitors. If you wait until the first week in August to book a room in Grass Valley--not only will the Holbrooke be filled, but also the other nearby inns and motels will all be full, also. There are several motels and small inns that are walking distance from the Holbrooke and downtown Grass Valley. Some are close to fully booked for the Conference weekend already, so phone them soon (using the numbers on the Chamber of Commerce web pages):
Courtyard Suites -- just a block from the Holbrooke, includes a sauna and swimming pool.
Holiday Inn Express -- just a few blocks away, a larger hotel with amenities, just not a historical one.
Sierra Mountain Inn -- a small bed and breakfast with a few rooms available.
Lamb's Victorian Inn, Elam Biggs, Swan Levine House -- all of these are old Victorians converted to bed and breakfasts, charming places a short walk from downtown Grass Valley, all in the same price range, starting around $150 per night and more for larger suites. Phone to see if there are still rooms for August 15th-16th-17th.
